At the beginning of the year I vowed to try to sit down for five minutes each day just to get something, anything, written. And it worked. By demanding just five minutes of myself I found, if I had something to write about, I could end up going for two to three time as long (for more on weekends when I had more time) and get some good thoughts down.
I got cocky. I thought, after just a month or two, I could then transition into turning each piece into a multi-day project to allow for more depth in each post. Big mistake. I wasn’t ready. If I’m going to do some longer form stuff I need to work out other habits to ADD to the routine, not just to change how the routine is executed. So, lesson learned.
The other thing I really need to make sure I do is to figure out a way to organize and catalog ideas for the future as well as writings from the past. I want to ensure that the writing I’m doing is not repetitive. However, if I do come back to a topic (unavoidable, really) being able to reference how it relates to or builds on a prior piece would be good.
All things to figure out how to add to the habit rather than to mess with something that was working. It’s always about getting better and learning from the experience.
